As the founding director of The Institute for Bioregional Studies Ltd. and a board member of the Centre for Local Prosperity, my work focuses on fostering local resilience. My graduate thesis, guided by social ecology pioneer Murray Bookchin, explored creating food and energy self-reliance in northern climates. It covered renewable energy, organic agriculture, direct democracy, and harmonizing human society with nature. I manage the Farm Centre, a vibrant social enterprise providing meeting and office space for NGOs. I also oversee the Legacy Garden, Canada's largest urban farm, which includes 200 community garden allotments, a community orchard, and several theme gardens. The Legacy Garden runs a therapeutic horticulture program for young adults with autism or those recovering from addictions or PTSD and donates produce to local charities to combat food insecurity.
